Wisconsin Electrician Exam Tools: Calculators and Labs
These are the pages you work rather than read, and each one shows its steps instead of only an answer. Their table values were read in the 2026 National Electrical Code, which matters here because the DSPS exam pages still name the 2017 edition and DSPS expects its exam updates to be completed by October 1, 2026.

The eight calculators
Voltage drop calculator. The resistance method and the approximate formula side by side, so you can see where the two part company.
Conduit fill calculator. The Chapter 9 tables for the fill percentages, the raceway areas and the conductor dimensions, worked step by step.
Box fill calculator. Every box size in 314.16 and the items that get counted differently, shown as a count rather than a total you have to trust.
Wire size calculator. Load in, conductor out, with the ampacity, the correction, the adjustment and the termination limit at 110.14(C) each on its own line.
Ampacity calculator. The 310.16 columns with correction and adjustment applied in the order the code applies them.

Transformer calculator. Primary and secondary, with the overcurrent percentages that sit at 450.5 in the 2026 book and at 450.3 in the 2023 edition.

The six games
Ampacity sprint. Table 310.16 against a clock: you are given a conductor and a temperature column and you name the ampacity.
Wire size sprint. The same table in reverse: a load, and the smallest conductor that carries it.
Which table. Ten prompts a round. Read the job, name the table or section you would open first. Three levels.
Code navigation race. Twenty timed prompts a round, picking the chapter, the article or the section out of four.
Article 100 definitions flashcards. Sixty terms, tap to flip, missed cards come back, plus a timed twenty card sprint.
Grounding or bonding sorter. Twenty four items sorted one at a time. Grounding reaches earth, bonding ties metal together, and several things do both.
The four hands-on labs
A lab is a page you work rather than read. You drag something, turn something or connect something, and it answers with the number it just changed and the section that governs it.
Conduit bending simulator. Drag the rise and turn the angle dial, and the multiplier, the shrink, the take up and every mark move with it.
Switch wiring lab. Drag conductor ends onto terminals on a three way and four way circuit, flip the switches, and a checker names the section behind each fault.
Box fill lab. Drop conductors, grounds, a device yoke, clamps and fittings into a drawn box and watch the fill rise, with the 314.16 rule on every drop.
Grounding electrode lab. Drag electrodes into the ground, bond them into one system and size the grounding electrode conductor.

The five drills
Daily question. One original multiple choice question every morning, the same one for everybody, with the worked explanation, the section cited and a streak counter.
Diagnostic. Twenty four questions across the main content areas, scored by area and ordered worst first, which is the fastest way to decide what to study.
Article drill. A timed drill on which article governs a question, scored in seconds, because an open book paper is lost on search time rather than on knowledge.
Spot the violation. Twelve drawn scenes. Click the one thing that is wrong, and every region gets an explanation, including the ones that are fine.
Calculation ladder. Eight rungs of exam arithmetic in the order they get harder, ten problems each with the working shown. Rung one is free and works with no network, and the other seven come with the $79 purchase.
The eligibility calculator
Hours to exam. Put in the hours you have and it checks them against the rule that decides, then gives you the date the grade opens.
Wisconsin sets a different floor for each grade. A journeyman license takes at least 8,000 hours over a period of not less than 48 months under SPS 305.44(3), and form 3106 also accepts 1,000 hours a year for at least five years, or a construction electrician apprenticeship of at least three years. A residential journeyman takes 1,000 hours a year for at least three years. An industrial journeyman and a residential master each take 1,000 hours a year for at least five years. A master takes 1,000 hours a year for at least seven years, or 10,000 hours over 60 months, or twelve months as a licensed journeyman electrician on form 3107, or a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering.
School counts at 500 hours per full-time semester, capped at 2,000 hours and two years on the journeyman grades and 3,000 hours and three years on the master grades.

Which edition these tools hold
The table values in these tools were read in the 2026 National Electrical Code. Wisconsin sits two editions away from that, and it is moving, so here is exactly what it means.
The exam pages still name the 2017 edition. Every DSPS electrician exam page named the 2017 National Electrical Codebook or Handbook when we read it on September 7, 2026, and DSPS publishes no date on which that edition stops. From October 1, 2026 the paper is expected to be on the 2023 edition. DSPS says it "expects exam updates to be completed by October 1," while the trade press reports the change as starting on October 1, and we print both wordings on the edition page rather than resolving them.
The work is already on the 2023 edition. SPS 316 adopted the 2023 National Electrical Code with Wisconsin amendments on September 1, 2026 under rule CR 26-016, so the field and the exam are on different books for the month of September.
The table numbers are the same in the editions we hold. Table 310.16 for ampacity, 314.16 for box fill, the Article 430 motor tables and the Chapter 9 tables all carry the same numbers in both. Our record of the numbers that moved between the 2023 and 2026 editions has no entry for any of them.
On the values inside the tables we are more careful. We read the 2026 tables and we have not set them against a 2017 or a 2023 printing row by row. Our crosswalk reaches back to the 2023 edition and no further, so it cannot tell you what a 2026 number is in a 2017 book. Use the tools to learn the method, and check any number that decides an answer in the book you are carrying.
One tool names a section that moved. The transformer calculator cites transformer overcurrent protection at 450.5 in the 2026 book, which is 450.3 in the 2023 edition. We cite section numbers and describe what a rule covers, and we do not reproduce National Electrical Code text or tables.
How to use them without learning the wrong thing
A calculator that hands you an answer teaches you nothing you can carry into a room where the arithmetic has to come from you. That is why every tool here shows the steps.
Work the problem on paper first, then run it through the tool and compare the steps rather than the totals. A wrong total says something broke. A step by step comparison says which step.
Then log the step you got wrong. Twenty problems logged that way point at your two real weak spots inside a week.
And practice the lookup, not only the sum. Wisconsin gives you four hours of seat time and lets you carry a code book, a binder holding SPS 305, SPS 316 and printed notes, and up to two bound reference books, so speed of lookup is a large part of what the paper measures. The book rules page has the full list.

Which code edition are the tool values from?
The 2026 National Electrical Code. The DSPS exam pages still name the 2017 edition, and DSPS expects its exam updates to be completed by October 1, 2026, so check any figure that decides an answer in the book you are carrying.
Can I use these calculators in the exam?
The DSPS reference list allows a code book or handbook, one binder with SPS 305, SPS 316 and printed notes, and up to two bound reference books. Practice the arithmetic by hand, and read the book rules page before you pack.
Do these tools reproduce the code?
No. They cite section numbers and describe what a rule covers, and they do not reproduce National Electrical Code text or tables. Check any number that decides an answer in your own copy.
What does the eligibility calculator check?
The hours rule for the grade you want: 8,000 hours over at least 48 months for a journeyman license, 1,000 hours a year for three years for a residential journeyman, five years for the industrial journeyman and residential master grades, and seven years for a master.
