Adopted is not the same as settled
Wisconsin Electrical Code: What Is Still Unfinished
The 2023 edition is in force, so the usual next edition question does not apply here. What is worth tracking instead is the paperwork that has not caught up, and three things nobody has answered yet.

Where things stand
The 2023 National Electrical Code with Wisconsin amendments took effect on September 1, 2026 under CR 26-016. That part is settled and reported by DSPS, by the trade press and by at least one city notice.
Three things around it are not settled, and each one is below with what we could and could not read.
One: the published chapter has not been restamped
SPS 316.007, Adoption of standards by reference, still lists "NFPA 70 National Electrical Code (NEC) - 2017" in the codified text online, with a history note whose most recent entry is an amendment registered in June 2018, effective 8/1/2018.
The chapter table of contents on the Legislature's own site carries "Register Date: February 2019 No. 758."
Until that is restamped, anyone reading the chapter online is reading the pre-update wording. That is why we treat the amendment subchapter as a subject index rather than as current text, and why we did not publish the post-update wording of any SPS 316 section.
We also could not read the enrolled rule text itself. The Legislature's rule text address for CR 26-016 failed on us, so our change list comes from DSPS's own rule documents, which are primary but are summaries.
Two: the exam pages have not moved
All five DSPS electrician exam pages still named the 2017 edition on September 7, 2026, six days after the field code changed, and the permitted materials PDF is stamped June 2025.
DSPS said on September 3 that it "expects exam updates to be completed by October 1," and two trade sources report the change as starting on October 1. Those wordings differ and we print both on the edition page.
The same DSPS information page still carries a line about plumbing exams and November 2023, which tells you how quickly these pages get maintained.
Three: nobody has said whether houses follow later
The previous cycle was staggered by occupancy. A 2018 DSPS bulletin shows the pattern: the 2017 edition was adopted for commercial structures effective August 1, 2018, and for one and two family dwellings effective January 1, 2020, seventeen months later.
Every 2026 source we read names a single date, September 1, 2026, with no split. No source says whether one and two family dwellings follow later this time.
So we are not publishing a separate residential date, and neither should anybody else without a document. If you build houses, this is the question to ask your inspection office.
And a smaller loose end: two effective date formulas
The rule draft says the rules "shall take effect on the first day of the month following publication in the Wisconsin Administrative Register." The DSPS Spring 2026 newsletter says they "will take effect on the first day of the third month following publication."
Both are DSPS documents and they describe different formulas. The date everyone reports is September 1, 2026, and we could not read the Register issue that would settle which formula produced it.
What about the 2026 National Electrical Code
Nothing we read says anything about a Wisconsin adoption of the 2026 edition. Given that the 2023 edition took effect this month, that is not a near term question.
It still matters for study material, because a lot of what is published now is written to the 2026 numbering, including our own question sets. What we hold on the moves compares the 2026 edition with the 2023 one, and it does not reach a 2017 book.
Find each rule by subject in your own copy and note the number it carries there. That habit is what makes an edition change survivable.
What to watch, and where
Watch SPS 316.007 for a new register stamp naming the 2023 edition. Watch the exam page for your credential and the permitted materials PDF for the code book line. Watch the DSPS newsletter for the next rulemaking package.
All four addresses are in the citations below. When any of them changes, this page changes, and the corrections page records it.
Questions people ask
Has Wisconsin adopted the 2023 NEC?
Yes. It took effect on September 1, 2026 under rule CR 26-016 amending ch. SPS 316, and DSPS confirmed the date in a press release on September 3, 2026.
Why does the online chapter still say 2017?
The codified text has not been restamped. SPS 316.007 still lists the 2017 edition and the chapter table of contents carries a February 2019 register date.
Is the 2023 code delayed for houses?
No source says so. The previous cycle was staggered, with commercial in August 2018 and one and two family dwellings in January 2020, and every 2026 source names one date for this cycle.
When will the exam change?
DSPS expects exam updates to be completed by October 1, 2026, and two trade sources report the change as starting that day. The exam pages still named the 2017 edition on September 7, 2026.
Will Wisconsin adopt the 2026 NEC?
Nothing we read addresses it. With the 2023 edition only just in force, an adoption of the 2026 edition is not a near term event.
Where is the actual rule text?
DSPS publishes the report to the legislature, the rule draft and the statement of scope, and all three are linked below. The Legislature's own rule text address for CR 26-016 would not load for us.
